Rangers have decided to keep faith with Russell Martin, despite growing speculation that he will be sacked following a dismal start to life in the Ibrox dugout.

The former Southampton boss was appointed as Philippe Clement’s permanent replacement in June, but his side are currently languishing down in 10th place in the Scottish Premiership table and they are without a win in their opening five games.

Rangers suffered a 2-0 defeat to Hearts on Saturday, thanks to a Lawrence Shankland brace, and fans were quick to express their anger by chanting for Martin to be sacked throughout the match.

However, he is set to remain at the helm for at least another game. That is according to The Daily Record, who claim that Rangers chiefs Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe have decided to stick by Martin, despite the club suffering their worst start to a campaign in 47 years.

What has Russell Martin said?

Martin will once again be in charge when Rangers take on Hibernian in the Scottish League Cup quarter-final next weekend, and the 39-year-old also confirmed that he will not resign from the Ibrox job during his post-match interview following the defeat to Hearts.

“You have to fight to get here in the first place, and we'll keep fighting until we're told not to. I don't think I've ever walked away from anything in my life."

Martin added: “I knew coming here wouldn't be easy. The majority [of fans] didn't want me here in the first place, which is fine, so then you have to try and change that around with results.

“At the minute all they see is the 90 minutes at the end of the week, so I understand the frustration, I'm as frustrated as anyone at the moment but we'll be here and we'll work until I'm told not to. It really is that simple.

“You have to fight in this industry to survive, you have to fight to get here in the first place, and we'll keep fighting until we're told not to.”
