Garnacho shows why Man Utd AXED him with nightmare Chelsea debut
Alejandro Garnacho has been slammed after his late error cost Chelsea all three points at Brentford on Saturday.
Garnacho was introduced for his Chelsea debut with 11 minutes to go and the Blues appeared set for three crucial points when Moises Caicedo put them 2-1 up in the 85th minute.
However, Fabio Carvalho equalised deep into injury time - just minutes after coming on - to earn Brentford a 2-2 draw.
Garnacho has been heavily criticised for his involvement in the Brentford equaliser.
The Argentine went to sleep at the back post after a long throw was flicked into his path, allowing Carvalho to tap the ball in.
What did Shay Given say?
"All Garnacho has to do is mark his man and he (Carvalho) doesn't score," Given said on Match of the Day.
"He switches off. It's too late when he reacts. His body shape is all wrong. He should be glued to Carvalho.
"And when he reacts it is too late."
Chelsea signed Garnacho from Man Utd this summer for €46 million plus a 10 per cent sell-on fee.
United put Garnacho up for sale after the player fell out of favour with the club and manager Ruben Amorim.
Garnacho was left out of United's preseason tour of the United States and did not feature in the opening Premier League games of the season.
Garnacho had been unsettled at Old Trafford for some time, and had not shown his best form under manager Ruben Amorim.
The 21-year-old Garnacho was one of the few bright lights of Erik ten Hag’s tenure at Manchester United.
He was one of the breakout stars in the Premier League in 2022-23, making eight goal contributions from 10 starts and 29 appearances.
He had a string of memorable performances, including the winner against Real Sociedad in the Europa League which made him the youngest foreign player to ever score for Man Utd in European competition.
Garnacho broke a string of records, and also starred in the Manchester derby, assisting Marcus Rashford’s winner in the 2-1 victory over Man City.
In 2023-24 Garnacho continued to impress, with 10 goals in all competitions. He scored in the 2-1 FA Cup final win over Man City, hit a memorable brace in the 4-3 victory over Chelsea and scored the goal of the season with a stunning bicycle kick against Everton.
Last season Garnacho saw his star shine less bright, with just six goals and two assists in 36 Premier League games.
He is now hoping to rebuild his career at Chelsea.
