Rangers’ Champions League hopes are hanging by a thread after a 3-1 defeat to Club Brugge in Glasgow.

Russell Martin’s side found themselves 3-0 down inside 20 minutes at Ibrox thanks to a defensive disasterclass that leaves them needing a miracle to reach the group stage.

In particular, Nasser Djiga came under fire for his part in the opening goal. The on-loan Wolves centre-back simply allowed Brugge attacker Romeo Vermant to run onto a long ball after a moment of miscommunication with Jack Butland that left the former Manchester United goalkeeper stranded.

Martin has been criticised for fielding three on-loan defenders across his back four, but the Rangers boss has been in the transfer market trying to sign reinforcements in this area on a permanent basis.

Now the Glasgow giants have received a definitive update on one of the players they were following.

Real Betis centre-back appeared close to moving to Rangers after a deal with PSV broke down. But as the Ibrox side closed in on the 20-year-old, the transfer ultimately buckled and no deal was done.

Mendy has now completed a move to La Liga side Rayo Vallecano, with the Madrid side confirming a loan agreement on their official website on Wednesday.

Russell Martin defends underfire trio

Rangers, meanwhile, are left searching for answers following the debacle against Brugge. Martin will be unable to find these in the transfer market as squads for the tie were locked in on Monday.

The manager was upbeat in his message following the midweek loss, surprisingly hailing the under-fire trio of Joe Rothwell, Max Aarons and Danilo following the loss.

He said: “It was Joe Rothwell’s best game, Max Aarons’ best game, Jayden Meghoma was fantastic. Danilo will be better for scoring and Djeidi Gassama grows with every game.

“There’s lots for us to be excited about moving forward. And the tie’s not over.”

Rangers face St Mirren in Premiership action at the weekend, with Martin and his entire team under fire after a poor start to the campaign.
