How much would it cost Rangers to sack Russell Martin?
Rangers manager Russell Martin faces the prospect of being sacked following the humiliating Champions League exit at the hands of Club Brugge.
The Gers suffered a 3-1 loss in the first leg in Glasgow but crumbled embarrassingly on Wednesday night in Belgium. After conceding the opening goal early on, Max Aarons was swiftly red carded for a last-man foul and from there the Ibrox outfit simply folded, conceding five before the break. Ultimately, they lost 6-0 on the night and 5-1 on aggregate.
Defeat to Brugge is only part of the story for Martin, who was a controversial summer appointment.
He has won only three of his first 10 games in charge, giving him the poorest record of any Rangers manager to this point in their career.
On top of this, the new signings that he has made have appeared substandard, with eight arrivals in the team that capitulated in Belgium.
There are now widespread calls for Martin to be sacked – but how much would it cost Rangers to take that action barely a month into the new manager’s reign?
Martin sacking a costly process
Estimating how much Rangers would pay to sack Martin is tricky given his salary is a well-guarded secret.
It is reported on SalaryLeaks that he earns £1.2 million per year, which is thought to be around half that previous boss Philippe Clement earned.
Furthermore, there is likely a clause written into his three-year contract specifying how much he will be paid if and when he is sacked.
Clement’s contract had a clause that allowed him six months’ salary if sacked. Martin is likely on a similar deal, meaning he would receive £600,000.
There is also the possibility that he would receive either one year’s salary (£1.2m) or the full remaining cost of his contract (around £3.4m), but these are considerably less likely.
On top of this cost to sack Martin, Rangers would also have to find money to part company with his backroom staff, which could double the cost of the decision.
