Real Madrid in pole position for Klopp appointment as Chelsea star causes collapse in PSG job talks
Jurgen Klopp has reportedly closed the door on joining Paris Saint-Germain this summer after failing to receive assurances of signing a Chelsea star.
Klopp is expected to be in demand in the coming months with plenty of clubs likely to be looking for new managers and the former Liverpool boss has been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid.
However, with doubts continuing to persist over the future of Luis Enrique at PSG, Klopp has allegedly been sounded out by the French side as a potential replacement but early talks have not gone well, according to El Nacional.
The Catalan outlet has claimed that Klopp is ‘not willing to even sit down and to negotiate’ unless PSG ‘guarantee’ the arrival of certain key players, with Enzo Fernandez considered ‘essential’ to his project.
Fernandez is said to have ‘captivated’ Klopp for years and the German coach has demanded that his arrival is dependent on PSG’s willingness to invest in the Chelsea star.
PSG, however, see a deal as ‘impossible’, with Chelsea having no desire to part ways with their star midfielder despite interest, prompting Klopp to ‘practically rule out’ a move to the Ligue 1 giants and continue waiting patiently for his next move.
Klopp facing uncertain future as options open up for return to management
Klopp has not managed a team since ending a nine-year spell with Liverpool in 2024 and the 58-year-old is currently the Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull, although recent reports have suggested that he may look for a new job in the near future.
While discussions have not begun over Klopp’s future, it is believed his departure from Red Bull is ‘realistic’, although he has been apprehensive about returning to the dugout anytime soon.
With the route to PSG seemingly closed off, Real Madrid may provide Klopp with a tempting proposition if they look to replace Alvaro Arbeloa in the summer and some reports in Spain have claimed that talks have already begun over his appointment.
Real Madrid could now be considered favourites to appoint Klopp after his refusal to entertain talks with PSG, although a situation could change if Julian Naglesmann leaves his role as Germany boss after the 2026 World Cup.
Naglesmann has a contract with Germany until 2028 but he is expected to be in demand for a club job this summer and his departure could allow Klopp to replace him in a role that the former Dortmund coach has long coveted.
