Barcelona’s financial problems have long-been documented and the La Liga giants will still be required to pull a balancing act if they are to make any major signings during the January transfer window.

The Catalans have been dealing with La Liga’s strong wage rules for a number of years, which has seen their transfer spend dramatically decrease in recent times.

Despite only spending €27.5 million in the summer, Barca are still operating on a tight budget and they may look to cash in on some stars if they wish to strengthen during the winter.

With that in mind, FootballTransfers takes a look at five players who could leave Barcelona during the January transfer window.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen

If there is one player Barcelona would love to see leave the club this January, it is Marc-Andre ter Stegen after seeing the club captain refuse to depart during the summer.

Ter Stegen has already been replaced by Joan Garcia in Hansi Flick’s team but the 33-year-old has struggled to generate interest due to his high wages and having previously been recovering from a long-term injury.

While Ter Stegen is a senior figure at the club, he is one of Barca’s top earners and the Catalans will be desperate to try and take advantage of rumoured interest from the likes of Tottenham to get his wages off the books.

Ronald Araujo

Despite once being considered one of Barcelona’s best and most important players, Ronald Araujo has endured a dramatic fall from grace this season after struggling with form and consistency.

The club vice-captain was heavily criticised for being sent off in the Champions League loss to Chelsea in November and the intense scrutiny saw Barca allow him to take a leave of absence to work on his mental health.

While Barca will wait to see how Araujo fares upon his return, the Uruguayan remains one of the highest earners at the club and Flick’s side would be willing to cash in on him if any offers were forthcoming during January.

Andreas Christensen

Barcelona would be happy to sell Andreas Christensen in January with the 29-year-old entering the final six months of his contract and not being a regular feature in the team.

Christensen has started just three times in La Liga this season and, while the Danish international is keen to extend his stay with the club, it appears likely that he will depart next summer.

However, teams from the Premier League such as Everton and Crystal Palace have been linked with a cut-price move for Christensen in January and Barca would certainly sanction his sale to get a fee for a player that Flick is not expecting to rely on.

Roony Bardghji

Roony Bardghji was one of just two players that Barcelona signed permanently last summer and the youngster has displayed intriguing potential in his limited appearances this season.

However, the 20-year-old has been a bit-part figure in recent months and Barca are willing to loan Bardghji out in order to help him develop.

While the likes of Villarreal are said to be interested in a loan move for the Swedish international, Bardghji is thought to be reluctant to leave Barca and could remain to fight for gametime instead, unless the club force his hand.

Marc Bernal

Another player who could be loaned out by Barca is youngster Marc Bernal, who has featured in just 100 minutes of La Liga action this season.

The 18-year-old is highly-rated by the club but he is looking to build up match sharpness after recently recovering from a knee injury which had kept him sidelined for more than a year.

Girona are among the sides who could look to take Bernal on loan, with Barca likely to be open to finding their young prospect some game time and fitness.
