Nico Williams 'in transfer spotlight' after Arsenal failure
Athletic Club superstar Nico Williams is reportedly aware he will be in the “transfer spotlight” yet again next year, despite signing a new long-term contract with his boyhood club.
The Spain international surprisingly rejected the advances of Arsenal, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Chelsea during the recent summer transfer window, with the 23-year-old instead opting to agree fresh terms with Athletic Club.
His new deal at San Mames isn’t due to expire until 2035 and his bargain €58 million release clause has been removed from his contract, with a €90m exit clause taking its place. However, he is still expected to be a hot transfer topic once again.
In fact, Spanish outlet Fichajes claim that Bayern are ready to launch another pursuit of his signature in 2026, despite the fact they signed Liverpool winger Luis Diaz for €70m in July.
The Colombia international has enjoyed a successful start to life at the Allianz Arena, registering six goal contributions in just five appearances for Vincent Kompany’s side, however the Bavarians reportedly remain interested in purchasing Williams.
The 23-year-old is also aware he will be in the “spotlight” during upcoming transfer windows and Fichajes state that his future could be decided in the summer of 2026.
Although Williams now has 10 years remaining on his contract at Athletic Club, this seemingly hasn’t dissuaded Bayern and the Bundesliga giants will no doubt face competition for his signature if a transfer is on the cards.
Nico Williams to stay at Athletic Club?
While Bayern are reportedly eager to rekindle their interest in Williams next year, the Spaniard’s decision to snub a transfer away this summer suggests he has no intention of leaving Athletic Club.
In fact, after signing his new 10-year contract in July, he told reporters: “I think we have a very long season ahead of us. We have very ambitious titles like the Champions League, which everyone would like to play in.
“What could be better than doing it with the club of my life? I would like to continue making history here at San Mames, with the fans, with my family, and with a lot of enthusiasm.”
