Why Chelsea should want 'new John Terry' to work under Lampard

Everton manager Frank Lampard hopes to sign defender Levi Colwill on loan from former club Chelsea next season.

Colwill is enjoying an excellent campaign in the Championship for Play-Off finalists Huddersfield Town.

Indeed, the 19-year-old has played 31 times for the Terriers in all competitions and has already been tipped to succeed in Chelsea's senior squad under Thomas Tuchel.

The Blues are letting go of both Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen on free transfers, to Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively, meaning there are places to be had in the backline.

But, the west London club are likely to let Colwill leave on another loan deal - this time to a fellow Premier League side.

And, dubbed the 'new John Terry', he is thought to be ready to take the next step in his career.

''It’s not a bad thing to be called the new John Terry,'' Colwill previously said on the comparison to the Chelsea legend.

''I haven’t made the comparison myself so the fans and media can make whatever comparisons they want to make, it isn’t going to affect me.

''John Terry is a club legend and leader, someone every centre-back at Chelsea should look up to. A great guy and player.

''When he was around the academy building we’d have the odd little chat but it’d be more of a, ‘Hi, how are you?’, kind of thing, not on a personal level about football or things like that.''

Why Chelsea should want Colwill to work under Lampard

Everton's scouts have been looking at Colwill, according to The Sun, who is on Lampard's shortlist ahead of the summer transfer window.

The ex-England international recently avoided relegation with the Toffees and now hopes to take the club further forward.

However, after a number of wasteful windows in recent years, Everton are limited in how much they can spend on the squad.

So, Lampard will have to look more closely at loans and bargains than he did in his days as Chelsea boss.

Though, in wanting to take Colwill on loan, it appears he is already on the right track.

And, should Chelsea decide to let the defender go, Lampard's Everton are the perfect destination.

That's because, even though his time in charge of the Blues ended miserably, the 43-year-old was responsible for the integration of several youngsters into the first team picture - something which had not previously happened under owner Roman Abramovich.

Lampard brought through the likes of Mason Mount, Reece James and Billy Gilmour into the fold, while his work with Fikayo Tomori is the most relevant here.

The two worked together at Derby, where Tomori won the Rams' player of the season award, before impressing at Stamford Bridge in the 2019-20 campaign.

He is now thriving at AC Milan and is due an England call-up, which should inspire Chelsea to let Colwill develop similarly under the club's all-time record goalscorer.
