David Beckham signs ex-Man Utd star for Inter Miami: Messi gets new team-mate
Inter Miami are set to complete a deal for a former Manchester United player as David Beckham’s MLS franchise add to their star-studded squad.
Fabrizio Romano has announced that the Herons are in talks to sign Sergio Reguilon, who is a free agent after leaving Tottenham Hotspur in July.
Reguilon has offers from several clubs but is most attracted to Inter Miami, where he would hook up with the likes of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez in a formidable-looking side.
Romano announced on X: “Inter Miami in talks for surprise move to sign Sergio Reguilon!
“Negotiations well underway to join MLS side on free transfer after leaving Spurs in July.
“Reguilon, expected to accept as he sees Inter Miami as the best option despite multiple proposals on the table.”
Reguilon to strengthen a feeble defence
Reguilon is a left-back who started his career at Real Madrid before enjoying a particularly successful loan spell at Sevilla, during which he won the Europa League.
He completed a £26.17m (€30m) move to Tottenham in 2020 but struggled to hold down a first-team place with the London club. As such, he had several loan spells, going out to Atletico Madrid, Man Utd and Brentford before finally being released.
The 28-year-old is seen as a smart signing for an Inter Miami side that clearly needs to improve its defensive options.
Messi’s team have missed the opportunity to win the Supporters Shield in MLS owing largely to a leaky defensive record. Over the course of 31 games during the 2025 season, they have allowed 52 goals – the second-worst record among the top 12 teams in the Eastern Conference.
With veteran defensive midfielder Sergio Busquets having announced his retirement for the end of the season, strengthening this area of the squad ahead of 2026 will be particularly important and Reguilon appears to be the first piece of this puzzle.
