JJ Gabriel reportedly wants to leave Manchester United primarily due to their decline over the past decade, rather than an immediate desire for regular first-team football.

The 15-year-old has formally asked the Man Utd hierarchy to terminate his contract with immediate effect in order to allow him to become a free agent, and the Red Devils are now locked in talks in a bid to persuade him to remain at Old Trafford.

Gabriel, an England youth international who is eligible to join an overseas team due to the fact he holds an Irish passport, has attracted substantial transfer interest following his request to leave Man Utd, with La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid believed to be the frontrunners for his signature.

The teenager was expected to be handed a first-team debut during Man Utd’s Carabao Cup clash against Brighton & Hove Albion last week, but such an opportunity never arose after he stunned club officials by demanding a transfer after being omitted from their matchday squad to face FK Sabah in the Champions League.

It’s reported that Gabriel’s representatives have already held talks with Barcelona and Real Madrid ahead of a possible transfer, and while Man Utd are still hopeful that a resolution can be reached, he appears highly likely to depart the club.

It was initially understood that a lack of a clear first-team pathway and a desire to be promoted into the senior squad now was the primary factor behind Gabriel’s push to leave Man Utd, but this has been disputed.

According to The Daily Mail, the main reason for Gabriel’s transfer request is Man Utd’s decline since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013. The Red Devils have not won the Premier League title since Ferguson’s final season in charge and Gabriel’s camp reportedly want him to “learn from the best.”

Meanwhile, it’s claimed that Gabriel’s family believe that United are currently “far away” from the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Premier League duo Arsenal and Manchester City. As a result, his camp are desperate to finalise a move away from Old Trafford in order to fast-track his development.

While Gabriel wants to leave Man Utd, this stance has been criticised by former England internationals Steven Gerrard and Joe Cole.

Speaking about Gabriel’s situation on TNT Sports, Gerrard admitted: “It's not just in this situation. Broadly, it scares me in the game that kids can now be rushed and careers can be forced.

“I don't know the details and the background in this isolated situation with JJ Gabriel but, if you look at it all, he's at one of the biggest clubs in the world. They've got a history and a tradition of producing fantastic players.

“There will be top people behind the scenes at Manchester United but the big thing for me is, you've got an English coach [Michael Carrick] and an English assistant manager [Steve Holland] who will want to [play him]. When the time is right, and when they think he's ready, protect him... they will play him.

“Michael Carrick is from an academy, so he will want to play him. But it's not just in this situation, it's the game as a whole. I'm sure it's happening in other countries.

“These talents, they have parents, they have agents, outside influences that force and rush too soon, and it can affect a kid's career.”

Meanwhile, fellow ex-England international Joe Cole added: “The fact he's had his name changed, for brand reasons... that's one thing. Him and a lot of other boys have been taken out of school.

“You have to be a kid first and a footballer afterwards. The whole situation has left a sour taste in the mouth of the people at Manchester United. They want to guide this kid, but one thing I would say, having watched him on a few occasions, is that he's super talented.

“I remember the noise before I made my debut. My journey was unusual in the sense that when you make your debut, you're 15, 16 or 17.

“The crowd are happy as one of their own is on the pitch. But when JJ Gabriel eventually makes his debut, at whatever club, there's going to be huge pressure on him now.”
