Former Chelsea midfielder Denis Zakaria has confirmed that he encouraged AS Monaco team-mate Lamine Camara to turn down a summer move to Stamford Bridge.

Camara, 22, was earmarked as one of Chelsea’s primary targets to replace Enzo Fernandez before the end of the transfer window and they struck an agreement to sign him for €55 million on Deadline Day.

However, Monaco pulled the plug on the proposed deal at the last minute and the transfer ultimately collapsed, with the Chelsea hierarchy furious at the situation.

Xabi Alonso’s side have been tipped to rekindle their interest in Camara in 2027, although their relationship with the Monaco board has taken a hit following the transfer failure, while they also have a number of alternative targets, including Manu Kone (AS Roma) and Alex Scott (Bournemouth).

In addition, it’s understood that Liverpool have now identified Camara as a possible successor to Alexis Mac Allister and they are ready to challenge for his signature next year, with Chelsea potentially set to miss out.

The Senegal international has played every available minute for Monaco so far this season, scoring one goal and providing one assist in seven matches, and it has now emerged that he discussed his proposed move to Stamford Bridge with the aforementioned Zakaria during the summer window.

Speaking to reporters in the mixed-zone after Monaco’s 2-1 win over RC Lens on Friday night, Zakaria was asked if he discussed the possibility of joining the Blues with Camara before the window closed.

“Chelsea? I told him that it was good but that it is better here,” the Switzerland star replied (via Metro).

“I know the player and the person that he is; he is very professional. I think that [the transfer saga] has given him even more strength. He was incredible today.”

What has Lamine Camara said about failed Chelsea transfer?

It’s understood that Camara was keen to join Chelsea on Deadline Day, despite Zakaria’s reservations, but he has already moved on following the failed deal.

“There was a possibility I could leave. It didn't go through at the last minute and that's part of football. I've turned the page and am focusing on the season,” Camara told reporters (via BBC Sport) in early September.

“I can help the team a lot. Football moves fast. Maybe other opportunities will come along. But for now, I'm staying focused on the season with Monaco.”
