Chelsea on 'high alert' after shock transfer update

Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong has reportedly attracted significant transfer interest from multiple top clubs across Europe amid ongoing speculation that he could leave Stamford Bridge.

The England U21 international has been linked with a Chelsea exit for the best part of two years, but the Blues convinced him to stay this summer, with new manager Xabi Alonso believed to have persuaded Acheampong’s camp that he will play a key role this season.

It’s understood that Alonso held a positive meeting with the 20-year-old’s representatives ahead of the new campaign, however transfer speculation has now re-emerged, with Spanish outlet AS claiming that several European clubs are monitoring his situation.

Acheampong has played the entire 90 minutes in four of Chelsea’s seven matches across all competitions so far this term, although he has only started one of their last four Premier League fixtures, with Wesley Fofana currently ahead of him in the pecking order.

The Cobham academy graduate reportedly features prominently in Alonso’s plans for this season, but transfer interest continues to bubble away in the background and AS report that Chelsea will be on ‘high alert’ if Acheampong decides to pursue a blockbuster transfer next year.

The likes of Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain have all previously been linked with Acheampong, and they may all rekindle their interest in the 20-year-old’s signature if he opts to explore a possible move.

Will Josh Acheampong leave Chelsea?

While Acheampong has attracted substantial transfer interest from across Europe, it’s highly unlikely that Chelsea will permit a sale next year unless they receive a direct request from the player.

His current contract isn’t due to expire until 2029 and he has been labelled as one of the club’s ‘untouchable' players, alongside the likes of Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro, Moises Caicedo and Levi Colwill.

As a result, Acheampong is expected to remain at Chelsea for the foreseeable future, with the Blues likely to rebuff any offers they receive next year.
