Why your club won't be playing over the Easter weekend in 2027
In a break from tradition, there will be no club football over the Easter weekend in England next year.
The Easter weekend is usually one of the highlights of the calendar in the Premier League and the English Championship as games take place throughout the day over Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
That won't happen in 2027, though, as FIFA has decided to shift the international break to over the Easter weekend.
In the current 2026/26 season, the two-week international break begins after the weekend of March 21 and 22. Next season it will cover Good Friday (March 26) and Easter Monday (March 29), reports the Daily Mail.
Neither the Premier League nor the Football League were consulted by FIFA before this drastic change was made to the English football calendar.
It's also likely that we'll have an extended international break at the end of the summer, lasting from September 19 until October 10.
Football matches in the United Kingdom taking place over Easter weekend has been a staple in the calendar for well over 100 years so it's possible we'll see some fan outrage over the decision from FIFA.
We've already seen outrage among some fans regarding fixture management as Boxing Day in 2025 saw just one Premier League fixture taking place.
That seems to have been a one-off, however, as in 2026, Boxing Day takes place on Saturday which means we'll have a lot more games taking place from the top flight.
