Manchester United could take advantage of Newcastle’s poor form by making a summer move for Anthony Gordon as the Red Devils look to continue their resurgence with some big money signings.

Newcastle, meanwhile, succumbed to a home defeat to Brentford which leaves Eddie Howe’s side 12th in the table and in danger of missing out on European football for next season.

With the future of Sandro Tonali already uncertain, the Magpies could face a further exodus of star players including Gordon after transfer reporter Ben Jacobs revealed that United ‘really like’ the England international.

"Manchester United really like Antony Gordon as well as a potential option, especially knowing that the player actually relishes the chance to have more game time through the centre as a number 9,” Jacobs told The United Stand.

Jacobs also confirmed United’s interest in RB Leipzig wonderkid Yan Diomande, saying: “There's appreciation for Yan Diomande, who's a very versatile player. Leipzig are kind of grandstanding at the moment and saying that’s a €100m sale."

Man Utd set for heavy summer of spending after Carrick resurgence

United are expected to heavily pursue a left winger this summer, particularly with Jadon Sancho leaving on a free transfer and Barcelona set to make the permanent signing of Marcus Rashford.

Patrick Dorgu had been used as a winger under Carrick, scoring twice in two appearances before suffering an injury that could see him miss more than ten weeks of action.

Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo have also been rotated to the left in Dorgu’s absence but United are keen to add another attacker to their unit, particularly after the change in formation following Ruben Amorim’s sacking.

It remains to be seen whether Carrick is kept in charge beyond this season but, should United qualify for the Champions League, it appears a summer of investment is on the cards, with Gordon likely to be a strong target if Newcastle’s misfortunes continue.
