David Silva comes out of retirement aged 40 with shock move
Manchester City legend David Silva has come out of retirement at the age of 40.
Recognised as one of the best players in Premier League history, the Spaniard began his professional career at Valencia before joining Man City in 2010 to become one of the club's most important players ever.
During his decade at Manchester City, Silva won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and five League Cups. He made 436 appearances for the club and scored 77 goals.
Silva left Manchester City in 2020 and joined Real Sociedad, where he continued playing until his retirement in 2023 after a serious knee injury.
Three years after hanging up his boots, he has returned to the professional game after completing a surprise move to Supreme Sha Tin, a club based in Hong Kong.
The club posted on Instagram: “Yo! Absolute madness!
“We are officially announcing that the legendary Spanish No. 21 midfielder, David Silva, has officially joined Supreme Sha Tin!
“David Silva will be in Hong Kong soon to settle in, link up with squad training, and build up to peak match fitness before making his pitch debut. Stay tuned!
“Our 'Founding Members' hit the jackpot on this one! You’ll get exclusive priority access to watch training sessions, plus a 1-on-1 photo op!”
In a video message posted to Supreme’s social media channels, the World Cup winner said: “Hello everyone, I’m David Silva.
“I am very happy to join Supreme Sha Tin for this experience; I’m really looking forward to going to Hong Kong to enjoy the culture, the people, and the food in Sha Tin—and the football in Hong Kong, of course.
“I can’t wait to go, so I look forward to seeing you all soon. Best regards.”
Jim Wong Chi-chuen is the owner of Supreme FC, looking to bankroll them to success. He acquired the club, which was previously known as Sun Source, and subsequently renamed it Supreme. He has been involved in the club's efforts to progress through Hong Kong's football league system, and they recently enjoyed promotion to the top flight.
What makes Wong particularly unusual is that he is not only the club's owner but also plays for the team. In 2026, he attracted attention after scoring for Supreme in a Hong Kong First Division match. He has also spoken about combining football with the music and entertainment industries, including bringing musicians and celebrities into the club's activities.
Wong previously courted Juan Mata before concluding a deal for Silva, who has joined on a short-term contract.
