Harry Maguire agrees Man Utd extension with ‘major personal sacrifice’
Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire has agreed a contract extension with the Old Trafford side.
Maguire, 32, is set to sign a contract extension with the Red Devils have agreed to a substantial pay cut, according to TeamTalk.
His current deal expires in the summer, but he is now set to prolong his Man Utd stay by signing a contract more favourable to the club.
Harry Maguire’s Man Utd salary
Maguire is currently one of the best-paid players at Manchester United, where he receives an estimated wage of €11.3 million (£9.9m) per year.
He arrived at the club from Leicester in a deal worth €87m, which made him the most expensive defender of all time when he completed the move in 2019, and received a wage fitting of that status.
Now a veteran member of the squad, he has started only nine Premier League games this season. While he has been a regular under Michael Carrick, the expectation is that his impact on the starting XI will continue to fall in the months ahead, and he has been forced to accept a substantially reduced salary.
TeamTalk states: “Sources are not privy to the sort of figures, or the reduction Maguire is willing to take at this stage. But his willingness to stay on reduced terms, commitment to the cause, and renewed importance only solidify his case.”
It does add, however, that a “major personal sacrifice” has been made.
Despite this, the indications are that Man Utd will still seek another centre-back in the summer transfer window.
How big has Maguire’s impact been?
Maguire has been a strong performer at centre-back this season, according to data analytics firm SciSports, which places him in the top-performing third of Premier League players in his role this season.

This does come with the caveat that having played fewer than 900 minutes, the judgment is subject to a sudden shift.
While there has been a decline in Maguire’s overall level, Man Utd are said to value his experience and leadership in the locker room – which are key reasons the club are eager to retain him.
