Jonathan David has made a promising start to life at Atletico Madrid, but the Canada international striker’s future remains up in the air.

David is coming off the back of a nightmare campaign with Juventus, where he scored only nine times in 46 appearances after making a free transfer from Lille.

Although his start to life in Spain has been far more promising – three goals and two assists in five La Liga appearances – Atleti have yet to make a call on whether they retain the striker.

Diego Simeone’s side have a €25 million purchase option for the centre-forward, who appears to be trending towards staying in the Spanish capital.

Transfer expert Florian Plettenberg says that while this is a possibility, there is not yet any guarantee that the striker will permanently trade Juve’s black and white stripes for Atleti’s red and white ones.

Taking to X, the Sky Sport Deutschland correspondent said: “Atletico Madrid are open to triggering the €25m buy options for Jonathan David.

“The 26-year-old striker feels comfortable at Atletico and is also open to staying. Contract at Juventus until 2030.

“Talks are planned. No final decision yet.”

Atletico Madrid can be a long-term home for David

Atletico Madrid offer an excellent fit for David, according to data analytics firm SciSports’ Career Advice tool, which rates the quality of a transfer to teams and assigns each a Club Fit score. The higher this score, the better the move is likely to be.

Atleti score a very high 85 for the Canadian, confirming that they would be an excellent choice if he were to remain in the long term.

However, there are two sides that score an astronomical 87. These are Serie A clubs Inter Milan and Roma. From Juventus’ perspective, though, they are unlikely to be eager to strengthen a direct rival by selling them a player with the potential to explode.

Remaining in Madrid therefore looks like the optimal option for the 26-year-old, who will be eager not to make another transfer misstep during his peak years.

A transfer bargain

Juventus’ price tag for David, meanwhile, is very generous at €25m and underscores the difficulty he had settling in at the Turin side last term.

His Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) sits at €33.3m and even reached €61.8m during his time in France with Lille.

The fact that Juve picked him up for nothing, however, smooths over many of the concerns that they are selling him at too low a price.

For David, the coming months are critical to the direction his career moves in. It’s clear that he needs to escape Juventus, though, and Atletico Madrid look like an increasingly promising option for all involved.
