The Red Devils’ desire to strengthen their attacking options is clear, although there are several other areas of Ruben Amorim’s squad that are also under review.

Sky Sports has confirmed that United remain keen on Mateta after missing out on Antoine Semenyo, with the 28-year-old potentially arriving to facilitate Joshua Zirkzee’s departure to Roma.

The same report adds that Amorim’s side are also targeting Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet.

Liverpool close in on surprise Joel Ordonez signing

Liverpool are “close” to completing a surprise January move for Club Brugge defender Joel Ordonez, according to Bolavip.

The Ecuador international has long been viewed as a target for Chelsea and is admired by Moises Caicedo, but it now appears the Anfield club have moved ahead of their rivals.

The Reds are seeking defensive reinforcements following an injury to Giovanni Leoni and the potential summer departure of Ibrahima Konate, while a deal for Marc Guehi is now considered unlikely.
