Manchester City have been sent a transfer warning over Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, although Eagles boss Oliver Glasner said the England defender is free to leave for “massive money”.

City have been struck by an injury crisis in the centre of their defence, with John Stones, Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias all facing the potential of being out for weeks. In the case of Croatia international centre-back Gvardiol, he is unlikely to play again this season.

Pep Guardiola’s side have acted to recall youngster Max Alleyne from Watford, but even with the 25-year-old back in City’s ranks, they still look threadbare at the back.

As such, City have been touted to move for Guehi. He is a player they were expected to move for in the summer, but given their injury crisis, this plan has reportedly been pushed forward.

Glasner has pushed back against losing the England defender – but only to some extent as he realises the financial reality of the situation.

Speaking after watching his team draw 0-0 with Aston Villa, the Palace manager warned City that Guehi will not be sold cheaply, but he has admitted that if a sizeable bid arrives, a deal will be made.

Glasner makes Guehi transfer admission

Glasner told Sky Sports: “I think Marc will stay but if Marc says ‘I want to leave’, and a club pays massive money – with five months left of a contract – every player will leave if you’re playing for a club like Crystal Palace

“I’m pretty sure our chairman will ask for a very high price for him and then let’s see. I don’t know if Marc wants to leave.

“Right now, when I see him playing, when I see him training, when I see his commitment and when we are talking quite often together, then I think the fans can be really be calm but you never know what will happen in football.”

What’s big money for Guehi?

Palace showed in the summer when they rejected a Deadline Day offer from Liverpool that they will not be bullied into selling one of their star players, so what does ‘massive money’ look like in the case of Guehi?

With five months left of his deal, Guehi has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €48.4 million (£41.5m).

A bid around or slightly over that value could well be enough to prompt Palace into selling given it would go down as one of the biggest deals in their history.

Guardiola open to a deal

With City on the verge of signing Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth, Guardiola seems open to another deal – although it’s likely to be the last of the window for City. FootballTransfers has confirmed that talks have been held between the Cityzens and Palace over a deal for the defender.

“Maybe we will get something in the January transfer window but it’s completely different. We’re not going to buy four or five players like what happened last season,” Pep said earlier this week.

Guehi to City certainly seems possible, then, but only if Guardiola’s side are willing to stump up the cash.
