Will 'Welcome to Wrexham' still be made if the club reach the Premier League?
When Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over ownership of Wrexham in February of 2021, they outlined a plan to bring Premier League football to the club and its fans.
What followed that change in ownership is an unprecedented three successive promotions to League One, League Two and then the Championship - all fuelled by money from Tinseltown.
Every moment of the new adventure has been detailed and highlighted in the behind-the-scenes documentary, 'Welcome to Wrexham' which can be seen on Disney+. As the players involved aren't elite superstars, the documentary dives into their personal lives as well as their lives on the pitch.
The dream of Premier League football is in sight, but the step up to the Championship has been tough for the club.
In the 2025/26 campaign, they are 18th in the table, with two wins, four draws, three losses and 10 points from their opening nine matches.
During the summer, they spent £33 million on players which was more than the likes of European giants like Barcelona, Aston Villa, Lazio, Celtic, Rangers, Monaco and Valencia.
Should that spending continue, it seems inevitable that they will indeed reach the Premier League, but one question has been on the minds of some football fans - will the 'Welcome to Wrexham' documentary continue?
One former player, Matt Jansen, certainly believes so.
"The directors and producers can make great stories - there could be a sacking of the manager, a player that gets injured or a big name player that comes in and is a flop or he’s brilliant and is going to push for promotion. They can still make it interesting," the 47-year-old told GOAL.
“They would have to carry it (the documentary) on because that is the ultimate goal, getting to the Premier League. They have done slightly less intrusive ones - 'Sunderland Til I Die', the Tottenham one, the Arsenal one. I think players like to be a little more private but they would have to carry the documentary on in the Premier League. If you want to keep private, you wouldn’t sign for Wrexham!”
Ryan Reynolds seeking transfer advice from Man City
It has been reported that Reynolds has personally reached out Manchester City officials for transfer strategy advice, particularly on scouting.
A source has told CEO Today of Reynolds: “Ryan is patient, but he’s also a perfectionist. He understands investment cycles - he built companies that way - but football is a different world. You can’t script form, luck, or goals.
“Reynolds, ever the networker, has reached out to contacts within Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City setup for advice on scouting and analytics.”
The report states Wrexham have “evolved into one of the most fascinating business experiments in sport - a masterclass in how storytelling and finance can collide, sometimes uncomfortably."
Wrexham may have started slowly in the Championship, but they are only five points adrift of the play offs at this early stages so a run at promotion is still a possibility and Reynolds and McElhenney want to get to the Premier League as quickly as possible.
