Alejandro Garnacho reveals true reason behind Chelsea transfer
Alejandro Garnacho has confirmed why he pushed to leave Manchester United in order to complete a blockbuster transfer to Chelsea over the summer.
The Argentina winger was involved in a public bust-up with Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim following the club’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final in May and he was subsequently placed in the ‘Bomb Squad’ at Old Trafford ahead of pre-season.
After weeks of lengthy negotiations, Chelsea eventually completed the signing of Garnacho for €46.2 million on 30 August, with Enzo Maresca’s side identifying the 21-year-old as the perfect player to challenge fellow summer arrival Jamie Gittens for a starting berth on the left flank.
The ex-Man Utd forward bagged his first Chelsea goal during their 2-1 loss to Sunderland on Saturday afternoon, and he opened up on the true reason he chose to join the Blues ahead of the match.
Why did Alejandro Garnacho join Chelsea?
Speaking to the club’s matchday programme, Garnacho admitted (via Sports Illustrated): “Obviously, in my last season at United, with the new manager, there were a lot of changes in the situation at the club and it was a bit difficult.
“I still played a lot of games last season, mainly from the start or sometimes from the bench.
“But when I spoke with this club, with the manager, it's important also the style of play we have now. He explained a lot to me in a video call with him, so I think it was a very important move for me and an opportunity to improve as a player in a team like Chelsea.”
Garnacho’s strike against Sunderland is his only goal contribution in seven matches for his new club, but his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) currently stands at €58.7m, which is over €12m higher than the fee Chelsea paid to sign him.
However, he will face renewed competition for places from Geovany Quenda when the Portugal star arrives from Sporting CP next summer, while Chelsea also remain interested in signing Juventus forward Kenan Yildiz.
