Arsenal sign Eze and IMMEDIATELY hurt Liverpool in the process
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner was bullish about Marc Guehi's future after his side's victory over Fredrikstad in the Europa Conference League playoffs, insisting that the Liverpool target simply can't be sold.
The England international is out of contract next year, and there have been no suggestions that Guehi is willing to extend his stay at Selhurst Park. This has left Crystal Palace in a tricky situation as they can't afford to lose one of their most accomplished players for nothing.
There is an acceptance - at least on the part of Palace boss Steve Parish - that Guehi will have to be sold this summer, and talks have been taking place with Liverpool.
So far, these discussions have not led to a breakthrough, with the Reds wary of overspending on a player who can negotiate a pre-contract in six months. Palace, meanwhile, want a large fee for one of the Premier League's best defenders.
Unfortunately for Liverpool, it seems that Arsenal's successful hijack of Tottenham's move for Eberechi Eze has only made their task more difficult, as Palace are now left thin on the ground, much to the annoyance of head coach Oliver Glasner.
Glasner fumes with Palace business
The Austrian tactician, who has delivered two trophies in a matter of months, has been left frustrated with Palace's business as the Eagles have so far only brought in free-agent goalkeeper Walter Benitez and left-back Borna Sosa.
A replacement for Eze appears to be lined up in the shape of Leicester attacker Bilal El Khannouss, but Glasner has made no secret of his disappointment that Palace have left it so late to bring players in.
"We are very late, there are 10 days to go to find the right replacements," Glasner said after his side beat Fredrikstad 1-0 in the Conference League. "Again, we could’ve done much better than we did. It’s no criticism, it’s just telling facts, this group is working so hard.
"It’s clear now I can’t do anything. I can’t sign the players. We have to act, and we need this. This is Crystal Palace's future. We need to add not numbers, we need the right players. The profile is defined for months; it’s not surprising Ebs [Eze] left.
"I just know if Marc leaves, then we cannot register anyone for Fredrikstad [second leg], so from my side, he has to stay. You see, we played Jefferson Lerma at the back today, we have no centre-backs available at the moment, and if Marc leaves - OK, maybe I will try my boots because I was a centre back."
It seems that Liverpool will have to do a lot of convincing to strike a deal for Guehi before Deadline Day.
