Newcastle United are pursuing a transfer for a Man Utd superstar.

Newcastle are making "serious moves" to try and sign Man Utd's misfit striker Marcus Rashford this summer.

It has been reported by CaughtOffside that the Magpies are trying to secure the England international as part of their squad building ahead of their return to the Champions League this coming season.

Newcastle finished fifth in the Premier League for the 2024/25 season and this entitles them to a spot in the League Phase of the 2025/26 Champions League.

It has been reported that Man Utd are seeking at least £40 million for Rashford, although Newcastle may be interested in signing him on loan instead of a permanent deal.

The winger is currently unwanted at Old Trafford and spent the second-half of last season out on loan with Aston Villa where he played a significant part in Unai Emery's side making it to the quarter-finals of last season's Champions League.

In fact Rashford was the best player on the pitch as Villa were knocked out by PSG and, had Unai Emery kept the Englishman on the pitch, they may have found a way to beat the eventual winners.

Rashford's poor form with Manchester is now a matter of record. After smashing 30 goals across all competitions in 2022/23, Rashford scored just 15 goals in the subsequent season and a half despite playing 67 games.

The Villa loan restored some of his spark but he has looked like a player in need of a new challenge and a fresh start.

Rashford wants Barcelona, Newcastle want Elanga

One of the interesting things about this current situation is that Newcastle are most assuredly not Marcus Rashford's choice of destination.

Marcus Rashford's dream move would be to play alongside Lamine Yamal for Barcelona.

While the 27 year-old has clearly accepted that he has to leave Man Utd, it has been made known that he wants to move to Barcelona.

Rashford already tried to join Barcelona in January, but the Catalan's FFP issues prevented the signing from happening and he had to join Villa instead.

This summer Rashford is already in Spain training and waiting for the Blaugrana to be done signing Nico Williams in the hopes that they will turn to him next.

This would likely complicate any deal Newcastle would be able to do for him, as he seems like he's going to wait as long as he can for Barcelona.

To be fair, Rashford wasn't Newcastle's first choice either and they only turned to him after their efforts to sign Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest were rebuffed.

This is a move where nobody is anybody's first-choice, but that's why it could be one to watch as it's rare teams get all their first-choices and back-up options, like Rashford to Newcastle, often come into play.
