Chelsea have been urged to complete a shock move for Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of the 2025 Club World Cup.

The Blues officially announced the signing of Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap on Wednesday evening, but they remain in the market for another centre forward following Nicolas Jackson’s underwhelming end to the 2024-25 season.

The Senegal international only scored one goal in his final 15 Premier League appearances of the campaign and Chelsea are now in advanced talks to sign Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitike.

However, former Blues midfielder John Obi Mikel has told his former club to pursue an ambitious move for Ronaldo instead.

The 40-year-old’s current contract at Al-Nassr is due to expire on 30 June and although he is reportedly on the verge of signing a new deal, rumours of a summer exit remain rife after he dropped a cryptic post on social media at the end of May.

Ronaldo has been heavily linked with a summer move to a club competing in the new-look Club World Cup, amid rumours of interest from Al-Hilal and Botafogo, but Mikel believes Chelsea should submit an offer for his services.

Cristiano Ronaldo to join Chelsea?

“Ronaldo is an amazing player,” Mikel told talkSPORT. “He's an all-time goal scorer so it would be great to see him also participate in this tournament.

“Do we need him at Chelsea? Of course we do. We need a number nine, but I think everybody knows the number nine that I want us to get [Victor Osimhen] and we're not getting him.”

When asked if would like Ronaldo at Chelsea, Mikel added: “I'd like to, but obviously we think [we know] where he might be going.

“Obviously there's this 10 day period of transfer window that's been open just for the tournament for clubs to get one or two players into their teams, to build their team for the FIFA World Cup tournament.

“So for me, I think it might be Al-Hilal he might go to.

“They're trying to make sure they get him to the tournament, which is going to be good for the tournament for the fans, for football lovers to see Ronaldo and Lionel Messi again compete in another club World Cup tournament - it's amazing.”
