Newcastle are worried that Chelsea will hijack their potential signing of Brighton forward Joao Pedro, according to a report.

The Brazilian attacker is determined to leave the South Coast this summer, and he has no shortage of suitors after two impressive seasons with Brighton. Pedro notched 30 goals and 10 assists in 70 games for the Seagulls.

The 23-year-old wants to take the next step in his career and has informed Brighton of his desire to leave, as recently confirmed by teammate Igor Julio. "Joao Pedro had already told Brighton some time ago that his desire was to leave, look for new things, take the next step," he told Trivela.

"It seems it will be difficult and complicated for him to stay here. The club already knows that, we have to be honest. I'm very happy for him. He deserves it. He's been here in England for five years, and he hasn't played for a big team yet.

Although Pedro has been linked with some of the Premier League's biggest clubs, the most concrete interest is currently coming from Newcastle. However, the Magpies are worried that more attractive suitors will enter the race.

Newcastle fear Chelsea hijack

According to talkSPORT, Newcastle are particularly worried about Chelsea activating their pursuit of Pedro as they remain in the market for a player who can play at centre-forward and who has a different profile to Liam Delap and Nicolas Jackson.

Chelsea have explored a move for Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, but they immediately made it clear to the Bundesliga side that they won't match their €100 million asking price.

Pedro, who is expected to fetch between €60m-€70m, would be a more affordable option, and it seems he would be keen on the move to Stamford Bridge.

In the above-mentioned interview, his teammate Julio also revealed: "He always told me that he really wants to live in London, so I think he will prioritise what comes from there."

Newcastle are preparing a 'formal approach' for Pedro, but they don't want to get dragged into a bidding war. Chelsea, who have made a habit of poaching coaching and playing personnel from Brighton, are the Magpies' biggest concern, it is claimed.
