Manchester United are reportedly ready to battle Liverpool for the signing of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha next year, despite their summer spending spree.

The Red Devils bolstered their midfield unit with the summer additions of Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, however they remain eager to improve their options in the middle of the park and they have now rekindled their interest in Nmecha.

The 26-year-old has established himself as one of the best midfielders in Europe over the past few seasons and he was heavily linked with a Premier League switch this summer after an impressive World Cup with Germany.

However, Nmecha extended his Dortmund contract in March and he is seen as a key part of their long-term plans under Niko Kovac, with a fee of €100 million set to be required to finalise a deal in January.

That is according to a report from TEAMtalk, who claim that Man Utd and Liverpool are both considering moves for the Germany international next year, with the former understood to have initiated contact over a possible mid-season deal.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur have also made checks on Nmecha over the past 12 months, although Man Utd and Liverpool are considered to be the frontrunners as things stand.

Nmecha’s current contract at Dortmund reportedly includes a release clause worth €80m, although that is only available from next summer onwards and a deal during the winter window will cost a higher fee.

Felix Nmecha to Man Utd?

Nmecha has scored two goals in 10 appearances across all competitions so far this season, and his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) currently stands at a career high of €58.5m as a result of his impressive form for Dortmund since the start of 2026.

However, despite Man Utd’s interest, a move to Old Trafford appears highly unlikely.

Michael Carrick’s side now have a strong contingent of midfield options, with Baleba, Santos, Tielemans, Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount, Bruno Fernandes and the injured Manuel Ugarte all in their first-team squad, and there are other priorities ahead of next year.

Signing a new left-back is Man Utd’s primary goal in the transfer market, while they also need to land a new centre-back and a new centre forward if possible.
