Arsenal have made 'significant progress' in talks over a deal for Viktor Gyokeres, who has just received a telling concession from Sporting CP, according to Portuguese media.

The Swedish striker remains undoubtedly one of the hottest properties on the market, yet the truth is also that he perhaps hasn't quite received the interest he anticipated after his absurd two years in Portugal.

Despite netting 97 goals and providing 28 assists in 102 games for Sporting CP, only Arsenal, Man Utd and Juventus have come forward with concrete interest in the 27-year-old in recent weeks, although there is also a latent admiration for him from elsewhere, such as PSG and Saudi Arabia.

Juventus have already dropped out of the race again as Gyokeres has made it clear that he wants to play in the Premier League next season, and preferably for Arsenal. However, the Gunners have so far been unable to strike an agreement with Sporting.

Tension between Gyokeres and Sporting remains as the club continue to dispute the existence of an agreement to let the player leave for €70 million this summer. According to O Jogo, Sporting want at least €80m now, and Arsenal aren't playing ball - yet.

Sporting make Gyokeres concession

The ongoing impasse has given Man Utd hope that they could still meaningfully enter the race, despite knowing that Gyokeres is prioritising a move to Arsenal.

Ruben Amorim is desperate to reunite with his former Sporting sharpshooter, but the progress Arsenal have made is described as 'significant' even if there has still not been a breakthrough.

Amid all of this, Sporting have now made a major concession to Gyokeres to, hopefully, avoid an awkward situation. Over the past week, it has emerged that the Swede has told Sporting that he will neither play nor even train with them going forward.

According to the above-mentioned report, Gyokeres is currently on holiday in Greece and has now been informed that he won't have to report for pre-season until 7 July.

Sporting's pre-season officially starts on 1 July, but Sporting have allowed Gyokeres some extra time off ostensibly because he had been dealing with a minor injury while away on international duty with Sweden at the beginning of the month.

In truth, this decision is likely informed by the fact that Sporting, like Gyokeres, want the matter of his future resolved quickly. It is important to remember that Sporting are not outright blocking his sale; they just want the deal to happen on their terms.

By extending his time away from the team, they avoid the conflict from escalating further as Gyokeres will not actually have to go through with his promised strike.
