Man Utd overhaul revealed: Duo worth €100m targeted as two starters set for axe
Manchester United are already planning an ‘overhaul’ of their squad for 2027, with two first team regulars set to be sold in what promises to be a pivotal transfer window.
United’s summer business in 2026 was surprising in how limited it was. Michael Carrick’s side signed three midfielders but otherwise failed to add to the manager’s options.
This decision was broadly criticised, with centre-back Lisandro Martinez even speaking out about the decision following the club’s Champions League loss against Atletico Madrid – earning himself a fine for a breach of club discipline in the process.
But according to iNews, those in Man Utd’s hierarchy believe the Argentine may have a point.
It states: “There is a recognition, even among senior figures, that the defence should have been addressed in the summer… As a result, the club’s recruitment team have set the wheels in motion to completely transform the rearguard roster.”
Man Utd’s 2027 transfer plans revealed
Manchester United are set to revisit a deal for Newcastle’s Lewis Hall – a move that their Premier League rivals were quick to shut down in the summer of 2026.
However, the Red Devils had the England star at the top of their shortlist and regret not adding a left-back to their ranks, and they hope Hall’s interest in a switch can help them force something through.
The other early option for the role is Bournemouth’s Adrien Truffert, though there is ‘plenty of competition’ for the France international.
At least one centre-back will be signed, with the possibility of a second arriving.
Moves could even come as soon as January should the club’s poor form continue, but the volume of deals will depend on movement within Carrick’s current squad.
Man Utd have three first-team defenders out of contract at the end of the season: Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez.
While this might typically be cause for panic, it actually offers the club some flexibility given they have the option of extending the contracts of these players by a year.
Martinez is likely to have his deal extended but be sold, it is claimed. Atletico Madrid were interested in the South American during the previous transfer window and interest persists from Spain in the form Ajax star, who has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €29.3 million.
Left-back Luke Shaw, however, could be allowed to leave on a free transfer as his wages do not fit into the structure that Ineos are putting in place. He would have to accept a deal at a lower price if he is to stay.
Maguire, on the other hand, is set to remain at the club, despite turning 34 in March.
