Manchester United are on the verge of formally announcing the arrival of Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha after reaching a full agreement to sign the 25-year-old.

Cunha will join the Old Trafford outfit for a fee of €74 million (£62.5m), after Ruben Amorim’s side agreed to trigger the release clause included in his Wolves contract, and he will sign an initial five-year deal with the Red Devils.

The Brazilian notched 15 goals and provided six assists in 33 Premier League games during the 2024-25 campaign and he is set to bolster a stuttering Man Utd attack, who mustered just 44 goals in the English top flight this term.

However, The Mirror claim that Man Utd initially wanted to sign Viktor Gyokeres this summer, before being forced to pursue a move for Cunha after being rejected by the Sweden international.

Gyokeres, 26, is expected to leave Sporting CP for €65m during the upcoming summer transfer window, but he has snubbed the chance to join Man Utd after months of speculation linking him with an Old Trafford switch.

The ex-Coventry City star wants to play Champions League football next year and FootballTransfers understands that Arsenal are in advanced talks to sign him ahead of the 2025-26 season.

Matheus Cunha issues Wolves statement

Ahead of his impending move to Old Trafford, Cunha posted an end of season Instagram statement that read: “Wolves, what can I say to you? What an incredible season. We didn’t get to where you deserve to be, but we did everything we could to make you proud. I love these guys.

“Individually, it was the best season of my life. All of this was only possible because of all the dedication and love I have for this club. I became the Brazilian with the most goals in a Premier League season, along with @roberto_firmino and @gabriel.martinelli.

“I made mistakes and got things right, but always because I lived this club so much. All I ever wanted was to do the impossible for Wolves. Another one is over. And thank you all for all the affection. Looks good, looks fine…”

Cunha will leave Wolves after a two-and-a-half year spell at Molineux, and he is expected to play a pivotal role for Man Utd next season.
