Bayern Munich are interested in Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, according to German media.

The newly-minted Bundesliga champions have had to completely change their transfer plans for the summer after missing out on dream target Florian Wirtz.

The Bayer Leverkusen star is on his way to Liverpool after choosing the Premier League winners over Bayern, and the Reds' first bid has already been made, clocking in at over €100 million.

In some ways, failing to sign Wirtz will be a blessing in disguise for the Munich outfit. Bayern are looking to reduce their expenditure, and signing the Germany international for what would have been a fee in the region of €150m would have made this task all the more difficult.

In fact, honorary president Uli Hoeness has suggested that Bayern would have had to take out a loan to sign Wirtz, which would have been unprecedented. Not splashing their entire budget on just one player also allows Bayern to strengthen in more than just one position now.

Bayern plot Wirtz revenge

With the Wirtz money freely available, Bayern can look to beef up their defensive ranks and add more dimensions to their attack. Indeed, they have started focusing heavily on the winger market in recent days.

In addition to Kaoru Mitoma and Rafael Leao, Bayern are now also exploring a move for Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, according to Sky Germany.

The Dutchman hasn't always been the most reliable and consistent attacker for the Reds, but when he is on form, he is an exceptional player, and he showed that on several occasions in the bygone season.

Bayern are said to have already opened talks for what some will surely see as a Wirtz revenge mission. Director Max Eberl is apparently a huge admirer of Gakpo, and Liverpool would be willing to do business for the right price.

The Anfield club spent €42m on the 26-year-old in January 2023. His Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) has since risen to an impressive €67.5m. Gakpo netted 18 goals in 2024/25.
