Dortmund change Sancho transfer stance as hopes of permanent deal suffer blow

Jadon Sancho’s transfer to Borussia Dortmund from Manchester United has taken one step backwards but also one forwards as the teams try to negotiate a deal for the England winger.

Sancho was frozen out of matters for months at Man Utd, where he fell out with manager Erik ten Hag.

He has since returned to Dortmund and has enjoyed something of a renaissance, hitting a particular high when the Bundesliga side faced PSG in the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals last Wednesday.

While that performance excited Man Utd fans, they are unlikely to see the 24-year-old back at Old Trafford, according to a report from Sky Sports Deutschland, which has outlined the current state of play in negotiations.

“Jadon Sancho does not want to return to Manchester United – regardless of whether Erik ten Hag remains in charge or not, sources tell us,” Patrick Berger claims via X.

“Man Utd are preparing for his departure. But no price tag set by Man Utd yet.

“Jadon is happy to be with Borussia Dortmund and wants to stay. Dortmund are exploring the possibility of a second loan deal – with an obligation to buy as the transfer fee for a permanent deal is probably going to be too high. Talks between the two clubs soon.”

Sancho transfer games well underway

This underlines the difficulty that Man Utd face in finding a buyer for Sancho, whose recent resurgence has failed to convince the handful of leading clubs who can afford his transfer fee and wages that he is worth buying.

With all parties seemingly favouring the Dortmund option, though, it may be that United have to cut their losses with him.

Equally, though, BVB will do their best to keep Man Utd’s asking price as low as possible, with the Red Devils aware of the additional funds that will flood into the Bundesliga side following their strong Champions League run.

It may be that these reports are their equivalent of the transfer games that Ten Hag played by praising Sancho earlier this week.
