Bayern Munich have got themselves into an incredible mess over appointing a coach. They've gone through at least five candidates now and been rejected, The Transfers Podcast understands.

Xabi Alonso was the obvious one.

He's the coach that everyone in European football is trying to get at present and he made a deliberate decision to stay in Germany for another year. There was a belief expressed to the media that if he did leave Leverkusen he wanted to go to Munich. My understanding was he never considered that. The option was to stay in Germany with the same club or to move elsewhere.

But they lost out on Alonso and I don't think they will get Alonso down the line.

They then went to Julian Nagelsmann, who they placed on gardening leave a year ago and asked him to come back into the position in place of Thomas Tuchel. He turned them down.

They had a conversation with Thomas Tuchel, who they decided to sack, and asked him if he changed his mind about it. He didn't.

They went to Ralf Rangnick, who, if you've watched a lot of English football, you would find a bizarre appointment for Bayern Munich.

And then went to Crystal Palace and tried to get Oliver Glasner, who has made a really good start at Selhurst Park, and have so far failed to get any terms agreed with the club.

Bayern want Vincent Kompany

I can confirm on The Transfers Podcast that they are now talking to Vincent Kompany, a coach who impressively took Burnley up to the Premier League in his first campaign as manager there, but has then gone straight back down again in one of the weakest Premier Leagues for a long time, in terms of the relegation battle, with just 24 points.

He is also on the shortlist at Brighton and Hove Albion alongside Kieran McKenna, who is very much flavour of the month and has just won Manager of the Year. Amongst the other candidates are Liam Rosenior who could see a return to the club where he began his coaching career.

I understand that Chelsea are looking at Kompany as a replacement for Mauricio Pochettino This comes on the back of Kompany being on their shortlist last year when they hired Pochettino and possibly because Brighton are interested in him.

We know that the owners at Chelsea love everything that Brighton are interested in.

Other coaches on the list are Enzo Maresca, who has just brought Leicester City up and who used to work in the academy system at Manchester City. He is highly, highly regarded there.

Fulham's Marco Silva, who I understand has delayed his return to Portugal for his summer holiday, Stuttgart's Sebastian Hoeness, Girona's Michel - part of the CFG group - and Sporting's Ruben Amorim, who was recently interviewed for the West Ham job and lost out to Julen Lopetegui.
