Mauricio Pochettino believes that Chelsea must sign experienced players this summer following a disappointing domestic campaign.

The Blues are currently ninth in the Premier League table, although they will go level on points with Newcastle United in sixth if they win both their games in hand.

Furthermore, they will face Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday, while they lost the Carabao Cup final to Liverpool back in February.

This season, Pochettino’s side have picked up just 28 points from a possible 48 against the teams currently in the bottom-half of the English top flight table and the Chelsea manager recently criticised his “immature” squad after they conceded a last-minute equaliser against Sheffield United.

Now, the ex-Spurs head coach has admitted that he will sit down with the club’s hierarchy to discuss their summer transfer plans, and is eager for Chelsea to add several experienced heads.

What has Mauricio Pochettino said?

Ahead of the Blues’ clash against Everton, Pochettino said (as per The Mirror): “We need to bring more young players, we need to bring in some experienced players. But that is all about talking.

“It's about agreeing with the club, analysing and designing the strategy for the next season and to go and fight for big things. That is really important.”

Chelsea spent €467.8 million last summer, but Robert Sanchez (25 years old at the time) was the oldest new signing at Stamford Bridge ahead of the 2023-24 campaign. In fact, Raheem Sterling is the only current Chelsea player purchased by Todd Boehly who was over the age of 25 upon arrival.

However, Pochettino wants to increase the experience in his first-team squad, something that will need addressing given Thiago Silva looks set to leave the club upon the expiration of his contract at the end of June. A return to Brazil has been touted as a serious option for the former Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan defender.
