Sofyan Amrabat’s uninspiring start to life at Manchester United has left the club considering a move for a defensive midfielder during the January transfer window, according to reports.

The Morocco international was chased by the Red Devils for the entirety of the summer transfer window and a deal was finally struck on Transfer Deadline Day, although Amrabat only moved to Old Trafford on an initial loan deal.

Man Utd do have the option to make the deal permanent, but it remains to be seen if they take up that option following his indifferent form since leaving Fiorentina.

Despite Casemiro’s drop-off in form, Amrabat has been unable to cement his place in Erik ten Hag’s preferred starting XI and Kobbie Mainoo’s return to fitness is set to result in the Moroccan falling down the pecking order even further.

The 27-year-old has started just four Premier League games this term, despite Man Utd’s midfield issues, following his ‘dream move’ to Old Trafford.

As a result, Man Utd are now considering signing a new defensive midfielder during the January transfer window, according to The Guardian’s Jacob Steinberg.

Furthermore, Ten Hag’s side are also hoping to sign a new right-sided centre-back, a number eight and a striker.

Man Utd want four new signings

Raphael Varane has not started a Premier League game since September, despite being fit, and looks set for a move away in 2024. In early November, FootballTransfers exclusively reported that clubs in Saudi Arabia are interested in the Frenchman as his Man Utd future continues to be uncertain.

Mason Mount’s summer move from Chelsea has not worked out yet and a new central midfielder is therefore being looked at, as per The Guardian, while a striker to support Rasmus Hojlund is also seen as a priority.

Anthony Martial is currently the Dane’s back-up, and scored against Everton, but he is out of contract next year and could leave on a free transfer.
