Alejandro Garnacho revealed which Manchester United player has become ‘like my dad’ to him after penning a new, long-term contract with the club.

The 18-year-old has enjoyed a breakout season this year under Erik ten Hag, making 29 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals.

His rapid progress has delighted United, with supporters believing Garnacho to be the club’s brightest prospect in recent years, and he has been rewarded with improved terms, signing a new deal which will keep him at Old Trafford until 2028, as exclusively revealed by FootballTransfers.

Garnacho was rewarded for his rise to stardom with a callup to Argentina’s senior team, however he had to pull out of the squad due to injury but the forward has revealed his teammate for club and country, Lisandro Martinez, has become like family to him.

“From the very first day I went into the dressing room they’ve really treated me like one of the lads,” Garnacho told the club website.

“I’m the youngest guy in the squad so players like Martinez, well I say around here that he’s like my dad! He treats me like my dad, when he needs to tell me off, he does, and when I do well, he tells me that too.”

The rise of Garnacho

Garnacho endured a difficult start to the season, with Ten Hag hinting that the teenager needed to mature before being integrated into the first team, however he made his full debut in October and never looked back, netting his maiden goal in his next appearance.

His previous deal was set to expire at the end of next season and there were fears that Garnacho could be tempted by a return to Spain, having come through the academy at Atletico Madrid.

However, Garnacho became a more focal point of Ten Hag’s team following the World Cup break, playing in all but two games before suffering an ankle injury which has kept him out of action until March.

With United targeting a return to the Champions League next season and continuing to transition their squad under Ten Hag, securing the future of Garnacho was one of the club’s highest priorities and the youngster is expected to become a crucial first team player in seasons to come.
