The launch of a new Premier League streaming service in Singapore has caused some controversy due to its pricing structure.

The English top flight dominates broadcasting rights both domestically and abroad due to highly lucrative deals with the likes of Sky Sports and BeIN Sports, but there have been discussions about a streaming service for a few years now.

It was first mentioned in 2020 when it was dubbed by some as 'Premflix', a play on the name of the biggest streaming service in the world, Netflix.

The official name for the new service is Premier League + and it will be launched in partnership with StarHub.

“We’re going direct to consumer in partnership with StarHub, who have a lot of existing customers," Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said at the Financial Times’ Business of Football Summit in February.

“It will be a new app that you can download on your smart TV or laptop. You’ll be able to watch 380 games a season, with lots of shoulder content and a 24/7 dedicated channel.

“Will it be replicable elsewhere? That’s what we’re going to find out.”

Premier League fans in Singapore can watch every single one of the games this season for just $25 (around £14) a month.

In order to watch Premier League football in the United Kingdom, you need both Sky Sports and TNT Sports, which come in at a combined £51 a month. Amazon Prime also now has the rights to some top-flight matches from England.

And, those subscriptions don't even give you access to all the fixtures.

The cheapest way of getting Sky Sports & TNT is £51 a month.

I believe that gives you 267 of the 380 games across the Premier League season.

Premier League Chief Media Officer, Paul Molnar, said of the new service:

"Today marks an exciting moment as we launch Premier League + in Singapore, giving fans in the country a new and enhanced way to experience the Premier League.

"Singapore has always been home to one of our most passionate fanbases, making it the perfect place to introduce this new experience.

"Working together with our valued long-term partner StarHub, we've created a service that combines every live Premier League match with innovative features and exclusive content, giving fans there more ways than ever to connect with the competition they love."

The Premier League isn't the first elite European league to launch its own streaming service as Ligue 1 + was launched in 2025. However, this was due to necesity over evolution as broadcasting deals fell through for the French top flight, forcing its hand.

"Subscribers can personalise how they watch with multi-camera viewing, live data overlays and dedicated club hubs," the official website states.

"They can also enjoy a wealth of exclusive content, including a 24/7 channel produced by Premier League Studios featuring live football, extended highlights, live studio shows, magazine programmes, documentaries and Premier League Originals.

"Beyond live coverage, the platform provides access to full-match replays, archive games, match highlights, preview programmes, review shows and a wide range of on-demand programming. Streaming is available in 1080p Full HD for all matches with a selection each matchweek available in 4K on capable devices."

It is believed that Premier League+ has launched in Singapore, in part, to determine how easy it is to run logistically with a view of potentially expanding it to other territories.
