The January 2023 transfer window is now closed - and what a transfer window it was!

The 2022 summer transfer window saw the Premier League spend a world record amount on new signings.

Article continues under the video

There were two €100 million signings in last summer's window; Darwin Nunez from Benfica to Liverpool and Antony from Ajax to Man Utd. Chelsea spent a world record €282m in total, Man Utd splashed out €238m, while the likes of West Ham, Tottenham and Wolves all spent huge amounts. So did newly promoted Nottingham Forest, who signed a staggering 23 players.

The January 2023 transfer window, which opened on January 1 in the UK, proved to to be just as exciting in the Premier League, given the incredible wealth football's richest league boasts.

Indeed, the Premier League blitzed the rest of Europe, spending more than double on its own than the rest of Europe's big five leagues combined.

The first transfer to be completed ahead of the January window was by the world's richest club, Newcastle United, in October. They signed Australia's 18-year-old World Cup attacker Garang Kuol from Central Coast Mariners for an undisclosed fee. In November, just ahead of the World Cup break, Brighton completed the signing of Rosario Central wonderkid Facundo Buonanotte for £9.9m as well as Swedish midfielder Yasin Ayari for £5m.

The biggest news of all was Man Utd rescinding Cristiano Ronaldo's contract in November. This came about after his explosive interview with Piers Morgan. After weeks of speculation, on 30 December Ronaldo ultimately signed for Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, where he will receive the biggest wage ever in professional sport.

Wout Weghorst has been signed on loan from Burnley after cutting short a similar deal with Besiktas, ostensibly to replace the Portuguese star at Old Trafford.

Manchester City's first signing of the window came in the final week as they swooped for Argentine midfielder Maximo Perrone from Velez for £8m.

Nottingham Forest made their 24th and 25th signings of the season as they picked up Gustavo Scarpa on a free transfer from Palmeiras in December and also picked up Danilo from the Brazilian side for £16m. Chris Wood then joined on loan from Newcastle with an obligation to buy.

Everton released Salomon Rondon on a free transfer and West Ham signed Sao Paulo youngster Luizao for an undisclosed fee followed by Danny Ings from Southampton for £12m. Just before Christmas, Wolves completed the signing of Atletico Madrid attacker Matheus Cunha, initially on a loan deal. It could be made permanent for £44m in the summer. They followed that up in January by bringing in Mario Lemina from Nice and Pablo Sarabia from PSG, the latter being a replacement for Goncalo Guedes, who rejoined Benfica on loan. Wolves also signed Joao Gomes from Flamengo for £15m.

On Boxing Day 2022 we had our first hijacking of the winter window as Liverpool stunned Man Utd by signing PSV attacker Cody Gakpo for a fee that could reach £50m.

Chelsea made their first signing of January on 28 December as they announced Ivory Coast forward David Datro Fofana from Molde for £11m, with Andrey Santos also arriving for £13m days after Benoit Badiashile completed his £34m arrival from Monaco. Joao Felix became their fourth January signing, joining on loan from Atletico Madrid.

And then Chelsea made the biggest signing of the whole transfer window, paying €100m for Shakhtar Donetsk winger Mykhailo Mudryk, hijacking Arsenal's deal, before confirming the arrival of English forward Noni Madueke from PSV for €40m. Malo Gusto has also arrived at Stamford Bridge, although he will spend the rest of the 2022/23 season back on loan at Lyon.

Arsenal reacted to the disappointment of missing out on Mudryk by signing Leandro Trossard from Brighton for £27m and Polish defender Jakub Kiwior from Serie A side Spezia for £20m. The Gunners strengthened further on deadline day, adding Chelsea's Jorginho to provide cover for Thomas Partey. Across North London, Tottenham picked up Arnaut Danjuma on loan from Villarreal, beating Everton to his signature.

Leeds made their first January signing on 3 January by buying defender Maximilian Wober from Salzburg for £10m. Brentford followed that up the following day by capturing Freiburg striker Kevin Schade for £22m.

The Elland Road club then broke their transfer record by signing Georginio Rutter from Hoffenheim for a fee that could rise to £35.5 million. Capturing the 20-year-old France Under-21 international is a clear statement of intent. Leeds also signed American midfielder Weston McKennie on loan from Juventus.

Elsewhere, Southampton made their first signings of the window with the £6m capture of Mislav Orsic from Dinamo Zagreb and £12m signing of Carlos Alcaraz from Racing. Aston Villa picked up Alex Moreno from Real Betis for £12m on January 11 before agreeing to sign striker Jhon Duran from Chicago Fire for £18m.

Dango Ouattara joined AFC Bournemouth for £20m after the Cherries purchased a minority stake in Lorient, Ouattara's previous club. Yhey also signed Matias Vina on loan from Roma, Antoine Semenyo from Bristol City and Illia Zabarnyi from Dynamo Kyiv.

Leicester's only deal of January so far has been the £17.5m capture of FC Copenhagen man Victor Kristiansen.

With two days to go before the window closed, there were two big-money deals as Newcastle signed Anthony Gordon for £40m from Everton, and Chelsea made yet another signing in Malo Gusto for £31m.

Deadline day saw Jorginho swap Chelsea for Arsenal, Southampton land Kamaldeen Sulemena, Marcel Sabitzer join Man Utd on loan and Enzo Fernandez finally join Chelsea for a British record €121m.
