Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at Manchester United remains unresolved, despite there being less than three weeks remaining in the transfer window.

Ronaldo has been linked with a string of clubs around Europe, but despite the hard work of agent Jorge Mendes, it appears that the Portuguese does not have a single serious suitor.

A combination of his high wages plus the adjustments any team needs to make in order to fit him into their framework have worked against the veteran forward, who is frustrated by Man Utd’s lack of competitiveness and their shambolic nature behind the scenes.

Ronaldo, though, has a history that is virtually unparalleled in the game, having enjoyed record-breaking spells at Real Madrid and Juventus. Indeed, some fans of Los Blancos have been clamouring for him to return, despite the red-hot form of Karim Benzema at the forefront of their attack.

Perez on possible Ronaldo return

This was evident in a video that has gone viral of supporters in Helsinki, where Real Madrid won the UEFA Super Cup with a 2-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt, approaching Madrid president Florentino Perez in the hotel they were sharing with the team.

“President, sign ‘El Bicho’, Cristiano,” one fan can be heard asking, referring to Ronaldo by one of his nicknames in Spain.

Perez replied: “Who? Cristiano? Again? At 38?”

The president chuckled about the suggestion – and also managed to get Ronaldo’s age wrong. He will not turn 38 until February.

Clearly, then, Perez and Real Madrid are not keeping close tabs on the player who is their record goal scorer.

It is forecast that Ronaldo, who only played 40 minutes of Manchester United’s Premier League defeat against Brighton last weekend, will get more playing time when they tackle Brentford on Saturday as the focus remains firmly on him.
