Gladbach boss rules out January move for Liverpool and Tottenham target

Borussia Monchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl has revealed that the club rejected an offer from Inter for star striker Marcus Thuram and don’t expect to sell the player in January if further offers come in for him.

Thuram has made a name for himself in the Bundesliga, since making the move from Guingamp in 2019, with 25 goals and 21 assists in 81 games for Gladbach in all competitions.

As such, Thuram has attracted interest from bigger clubs and particularly ones in England, with Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur both being heavily linked with the French striker over the course of the past 12 months.

Inter were also heavily linked with a move for Thuram and according to a report from BILD at the time, Gladbach received an offer of €39 million for the goal scorer.

However, according to Eberl, such an offer was rejected because the German club and the player himself had no interest in accepting it. And the Gladbach boss doesn’t expect that to change in January.

“It’s true that Inter showed great interest and there was a very specific offer,” Eberl has told Bild.

“But first of all, Marcus didn’t want to leave. Second, we looked at the offer but didn’t want to let him go. Then there was the injury.”

Could Thuram move to Tottenham or Liverpool in January?

While Eberl seems confident of keeping Thuram at the club in January, the club may have to contend with bigger offers from Premier League sides in desperate need of new attacking talent.

A few months ago that certainly could have been Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side, but they now seem far more content with in-form pairing Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane. However, if neither player signs up to a contract extension in the coming months, the Anfield club may start looking for long-term replacements.

A more likely scenario is that Tottenham will spend a sizable amount of money on a No.9 that can step in for Harry Kane when necessary and as such the London club may turn to Thuram to fulfil that role.

And with a contract expiring in 2023, Gladbach may need to seriously consider an offer from Spurs if it matches or exceeds what Inter offered in the summer window.
