The Uruguay left-back made 27 appearances across all competitions for Celtic last year and he was widely expected to return to the club on a permanent basis over the summer, with Martin O’Neill eager for his side to finalise a transfer.

Saracchi played a pivotal role during Celtic’s win over Hearts on the final day of the season, which clinched the Scottish Premiership title, but the club’s hierarchy were reluctant to agree a permanent deal and they eventually announced the loan signing of Chelsea youngster Landon Emenalo on Transfer Deadline Day instead.

With a move back to Celtic failing to materialise, Saracchi subsequently left Boca Juniors to join MLS side Houston Dynamo for €1.1 million, however he has endured an injury-hit start to his career in the United States and he has made just two appearances to date.

The 28-year-old’s current contract at Houston Dynamo runs until 2029, but he has now confirmed that he wants to return to Celtic Park in the future.

Marcelo Saracchi transfer request

“It seemed like Martin [O’Neill] was really interested and keen on keeping me. I explained the situation to them that I wanted to give respect and time to the people in Houston as well. But it did feel like the negotiations were going long,” Saracchi admitted to The Daily Record when asked if he felt let down by Celtic’s failure to sign him.

“I did explain my situation and I know Martin was really interested in bringing me back.

“I definitely don’t want to be on a team that doesn’t want me. It was more me and my agent calling them because I wanted to come back and be a Celtic player. It wasn’t much of them reaching out to us and giving me an offer. I tried everything possible to go back. It felt like there wasn’t much intention from their end. They didn’t give any offer. But I wish them the best and I always try to keep track on how they are doing.”

Saracchi added: “Do I hope I’ll be able to play for Celtic again? I think yes. Honestly, the story with me and Celtic isn’t finished yet. I would like to go back.

“But like I said, it’s just on their end to see their interest and their intention in wanting me there. But things could change. There are always solutions, so I think yes.”
