Evan Ferguson to Celtic: Major transfer update after season-ending injury
Celtic have been given what looks like a definitive update on the future of Evan Ferguson just hours after he netted a Europa League double for Roma at Celtic Park.
Ferguson has struggled for game time and form with the Serie A club, which has led to the suggestion he could be sent back to Brighton in the January transfer window.
The Seagulls have offered the Republic of Ireland striker to numerous clubs, of which Celtic are one.
The Parkhead outfit appear to be crying out for reinforcements after a 3-0 loss to Roma, of which Ferguson was a major architect as he stole in to score a first-half brace.
Daizen Maeda was deployed as the No.9 for the Bhoys in that clash, with Johnny Kenny lacking the immediate impact required to play that role and Kelechi Iheanacho not yet fully fit.
There is, therefore, an increasing clamour for Celtic to go out and find a centre-forward in January. Ferguson, a boyhood fan of the Glasgow side, looks an appealing prospect given that he would arrive on loan and would be a comparatively low-cost and low-risk option.
But Celtic’s hopes of landing the striker may just have been thwarted just hours after the Parkhead support got a tantalising taste of what he’s capable of.
Ferguson ‘an option’ for Brighton
Fortune rather than mismanagement is set to cost the Hoops the chance of landing the Irishman.
Brighton have confirmed that striker Stefanos Tzimas has gone down with a season-ending injury, meaning the Premier League side may seek to recall and retain Ferguson.
It’s something that manager Fabian Hurzeler has admitted is a distinct possibility.
Speaking to the press, he said: “Evan is a player for us, that is why he will always be an option.
“At the moment he is on loan but we follow it, we are pleased with how he performed yesterday. Of course we all follow it, so definitely he might be an option.”
