Lionel Messi’s future is up in the air as the Argentine star’s contract runs out in at the end of the season, allowing him to sign for any club after the January transfer window on a free transfer.

Messi signed for Paris Saint-Germain back in 2021 after leaving Barcelona following the expiry of his contract, and he signed a two-year deal which runs out at the end of the current campaign.

There have been reports suggesting Barcelona would like to bring him back, while PSG want to keep him in their side and continue with their super attack of him, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

As of now, it’s unclear where exactly he’ll be playing his football in the 2023-24 campaign: PSG, Barcelona or anywhere else in Europe or away.

Messi has options for his future

Messi has made it clear he will decide his future after this winter’s World Cup in Qatar, with both Barcelona and PSG eager to make the first move and commit to them.

From Barcelona’s side, President Joan Laporta and manager Xavi have talked up a return for Messi, with the club eager to give him a great final few years to his career.

They will, however, have to build bridges once again to repair the fractured relationship from last time, which ended in a bad way, forcing him to depart his boyhood club.

As of now, neither PSG nor Barcelona have made a firm offer for Messi – he won’t come in cheap, and Barcelona will have to assess their financial situation to see if they can afford him for a few years.

Messi has been talking up life at PSG in recent interviews, suggesting he feels more comfortable in the city and is adapting better to life at the club.

He has had a better start to the season under new manager Christophe Galtier, and PSG feel more confident of being successful on the domestic and continental scene in this campaign.
