Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma says “things have to change” in his battle with Keylor Navas for the number 1 spot at the club.

The Italian international, who joined after winning Player of the Tournament award at Euro 2020, has had appearances limited as his role has been shared with the Costa Rican goalkeeper.

Donnarumma moved from Milan last summer after his contract with the Serie A side expired last summer, and he joined PSG in a star-studded transfer window for the French club.

What does Donnarumma want at PSG?

Many expected that to be the end of Navas’ time in Ligue 1, but it hasn’t panned out that way as Mauricio Pochettino has constantly rotated between the two goalkeepers.

That hasn’t pleased Donnarumma, who expected to be the outright number 1 and has had to make do with a shared role.

In all competitions, Donnarumma has made 22 appearances, while Navas has made 24, which has created a goal for next season for the Italian.

"I'll stay at PSG and I'll try to win the Champions League," the 23-year-old said after PSG won their 10th Ligue 1 title over the weekend.

"But I'm here to be the owner [of the No.1 shirt]. As I said, for me it was a year of acclimatisation, it was not easy to change, language and habits.

"I have an excellent relationship with Navas but, as he also said, it was not easy to experience this competition. Things certainly have to change."

His counterpart, Navas, has been at PSG since the start of the 2019-20 season, winning two Ligue 1 titles and two French Cups, as well as playing a crucial part in the team that reached the Champions League final in 2020.

In all, he has made 104 appearances for the club and has been a trusted figure by Pochettino in his time there.
