Wemby makes 'incredible' 2026 World Cup prediction, names his favourites
Victor Wembanyama has backed his friend Kylian Mbappe to lead France to victory in the 2026 World Cup by declaring his home nation as ‘favourites’.
Wembanyama is one of the biggest names in the NBA after an incredible season for the San Antonio Spurs and the 22-year-old is one of the favourites to be named the season’s MVP.
With Wembanyama being part of a growing European contingent in the NBA, the French youngster still has kept eyes on Les Bleus, particularly with Mbappe captaining the side.
And, although Wembanyama admitted he had not given Didier Deschamps’ side any advice on how to win, the 7 foot 4 inch star believes France can add to their 1998 and 2018 titles with a third this summer.
“No, I didn't give them any advice. I watched them, and I still watch them on TV. I'm incredibly excited about the World Cup,” Wembanyama said. “I think we are the favourites. It's going to be incredible."
France have been drawn alongside Senegal, Norway and a to-be-decided fourth team in Group I for the tournament in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
Wembanyama set for long trip to see Mbappe and France in 2026 World Cup
Although San Antonio will not host to any World Cup matches this summer, neighbouring Texas cities Dallas and Houston will feature, including a tantalising semi-final to be held in Arlington.
All of France’s group stage games will be played on the east coast of the USA, as well as one match in Toronto, meaning Wembanyama – or Wemby – will have to travel if he wants to watch his side in action.
Wemby is expected to show strong support for Mbappe in the summer, having developed a strong friendship with the Real Madrid star in recent years.
The pair both grew up in Paris and, although there is five years difference in their ages, their respective rises to stardom has proven a common ground to build a relationship.
Having posted each other on social media, as well as many meet-ups for promotional reasons, Wemby and Mbappe could cross paths during the tournament if the Spurs giant opts to see France play live.
