Vinicius Jr threatens to pull a Kylian Mbappe on Real Madrid
Contract talks between Real Madrid and Vinicius Jr have come to a standstill, according to Spanish media.
For several weeks, it appeared as though the Brazilian superstar would extend his contract with Los Blancos after turning down a record-breaking move to Saudi Arabia.
Vinicius decided that he wants to continue at Real Madrid, but it increasingly looks like he will only do so on his terms. According to El Chiringuito, extension talks with the 24-year-old have gone 'very cold.'
It is claimed that Vinicius has put negotiations on ice as he wants to have full control over his destiny, which essentially means that he wants to have the ability to run down his contract should he, for whatever reason, choose to seek a new challenge in the future.
His current deal still runs until 2027 and boasts a €1 billion release clause. Vinicius, however, would ideally like to be able to move in the future without having to rely on the green light from Real Madrid.
Vinicius to pull an Mbappe?
The advantages of a Bosman transfer are obvious. It enables players to independently choose their next club while also getting a large payoff in the form of a signing-on fee.
Elite players, who have the leverage and clout to demand outrageous sums, are increasingly running down their contracts so as to be able to move on a 'free' transfer.
Ironically, Real Madrid have been the biggest beneficiaries of this in recent seasons. Last year, Kylian Mbappe finally joined the club on a free after years of speculation, and Trent Alexander-Arnold followed suit this summer.
If the reporting on Vinicius' contract stance turns out to be true, Real Madrid could be on the receiving end of a similar transfer trick, although at this point, there is nothing to suggest that the Brazilian is looking to leave anytime soon.
