Leroy Sane involved in Oktoberfest altercation over Galatasaray insults
Ex-Bayern winger Leroy Sane has confirmed that he was involved in an altercation at Oktoberfest after being provoked with insults directed at his new club Galatasaray.
The 29-year-old left Bayern in the summer and made the surprising decision to head to Istanbul, joining Galatasaray on a lucrative contract. His choice of club has come in for significant criticism in Germany as Sane was still a regular in the national team prior to his transfer.
There had been talk of interest from Arsenal, while Bayern were open to extending his contract, so many felt that Sane's move to Turkey illustrated a lack of ambition.
Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann has essentially confirmed that he won't pick Sane again unless he really catches fire at Galatasaray. This hasn't happened so far, however, and the winger has even lost his place in the side.
He was an unused substitute against Liverpool and only played a handful of minutes against city rivals Besiktas before the international break. It has been a difficult week for Sane, and things escalated on Sunday evening.
Sane involved in Oktoberfest scuffle
Despite not having been picked for Germany's upcoming games, Sane nevertheless opted to return home after Saturday's clash with Besiktas to visit Oktoberfest, an annual tradition during his Bayern days.
However, he was not really afforded any time to relax with friends and family. According to BILD, Sane was repeatedly provoked and insulted by a man with comments like "s*** Galatasaray."
Things came to a head shortly after 11 pm when a momentary skirmish ensued before the two belligerents were separated by security. Sane has confirmed that an altercation took place.
"I was provoked and personally insulted in the festival tent over a prolonged period of time - even my club, Galatasaray, was insulted," the 29-year-old said.
"In the heated atmosphere, I was pushed, and then there was a brief scuffle. Of course, I should have reacted more calmly and switched off - I will keep that in mind going forward."
Christine da Silva, a spokeswoman for the company that operated the 'wine tent,' said: "There was a minor security incident in the tent on Sunday evening, but the security forces moderated it and were able to resolve it peacefully. No police were needed."
