Liverpool have joined the race to sign Brighton midfielder Alexis Max Allister.

The Reds may face stiff competition from Arsenal and Manchester City over a summer move, however.

The Daily Star report that Jurgen Klopp wants to bring in the Argentina international to Anfield after he impressed during his World Cup-winning campaign with his home nation.

Mac Allister, who joined the Seagulls 2019 after the side paid £7m to prise him away from Argentinos Juniors, has been one of the standout players for the club this season, featuring regularly in the starting XI.

The Latin American has seven goals under his belt this campaign, scored in all competitions.

Brighton have slapped a £70m valuation on the 24-year-old ahead of the upcoming window.

Arsenal brought in 31-year-old Jorginho in January, but the younger Mac Allister would represent more of a long-term option, and an opportunity to link back up with Leandro Trossard, who left for the Gunners during the winter window.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are in desperate need of new midfielders, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita both set to leave on free transfers in the summer.

Their main target is Jude Bellingham - but the spending won’t just stop with him.

Mac Allister on World Cup triumph

Mac Allister recently spoke to the Daily Mail about the impact winning the World Cup in Qatar has had on his life.

He said: “When I was playing at Boca Juniors, on loan from Brighton, it was similar. When you go out, everyone recognises you. But for me it's not a problem because I prefer to stay at home, not go out so much. I stay home and watch football. I am a quiet guy. I'm not going to film premieres or anything like that.

“On the pitch, winning the World Cup has made me a more confident player. Even the opposition see you differently. It's been amazing. You get more recognised when you play and people pay you more attention. And I know that what we have done is special. Every person in Argentina will remember us as world champions.

“If you speak about confidence though, one day you can be full of confidence and it can go.”
