Bayern legend Thomas Muller teases MLS transfer: 'Interesting league'
Bayern Munich legend Thomas Muller has confirmed that he will not retire this summer and admitted that he is interested in a move to Major League Soccer.
Heading into the summer, the 35-year-old was keen to extend his contract with boyhood club Bayern. Muller is the Bundesliga behemoth's record appearance-maker and wanted to continue his successful career in Munich.
However, with the veteran an increasingly peripheral figure under Vincent Kompany, Bayern opted against extending his lucrative contract, forcing him to make a decision on whether to retire or continue playing elsewhere.
In recent days, it emerged that Muller was increasingly leaning towards the latter option, a decision the 2014 World Cup winner has now confirmed. "I still want to play football and have therefore decided that I will definitely continue playing," he told ZDF.
What Muller hasn't yet revealed is where he will continue his career. Recently, reports from Australia claimed that Muller is in talks with Sydney FC, but the expectation in Germany is that the attacker will move to MLS.
Muller confirms MLS interest
The consensus has been for some time that Muller is genuinely interested in playing in the US, and it increasingly looks as though he will indeed be heading stateside.
When quizzed on the matter, Muller acknowledged: "Of course, I've been thinking about this possibility as I want to expand my horizons. MLS is certainly an interesting league – especially with the World Cup in America next year."
His next club remains unknown. FC Cincinnati were the first to make a concrete move for the German when it became clear that he would be leaving Bayern.
Cincy made an approach for Muller in April, but the interest was rebuffed by the player. They continue to be linked with him, however, and they do hold his Discovery Rights, so they will benefit from his move to MLS even if he ends up playing elsewhere.
There had also been tentative links with a move to Inter Miami earlier this summer. At the Club World Cup, Muller admitted that he wouldn't be opposed to playing alongside Lionel Messi but insisted that he was not in contact with David Beckham's franchise.
Miami are on the verge of signing Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodrigo de Paul in a big-money deal, meaning that they would struggle to also add Muller. At present, it is unclear how Miami plan to register De Paul considering that they already have all of their Designated Player slots filled.
The most realistic option for Muller is LAFC. The Californians have reportedly been in discussions with the player's camp for some time, and Bayern Munich have reportedly also been pushing for the veteran to move to the BMO Stadium.
The two clubs have been maintaining a cooperative partnership since 2023, so a move to LAFC would keep Muller in Bayern's orbit, allowing them to employ him as a kind of ambassador in the American market.
