Alexander Isak RIGHT to push for Liverpool move: Newcastle aren’t a big club!
Alexander Isak’s desire to explore a transfer to Liverpool from Newcastle United is a logical step because Eddie Howe’s side are not a big club outside their own city, a former Premier League striker has argued.
Although Isak has been linked with a move to Liverpool for many weeks, the Sweden international forward was declared not for sale by Newcastle.
But the 25-year-old has taken matters into his own hands by telling the board of the St James’ Park side that he wants to explore the possibility of a transfer.
Any club seeking to sign Isak will have to pay a British record fee to prise him away from Newcastle, where he is still under contract until 2028. Liverpool have shown an appetite to spend big in the transfer market this summer, already splashing out more than €300 million in four major new additions, while there is also the possibility of a move to the Saudi Pro League.
The Magpies, meanwhile, will try to tie Isak down to a new deal, although his £300,000-per-week wage demands would “smash” their salary structure.
Now Gabriel Agbonlahor has explained why he is not surprised to see Isak push for a move to Anfield.
Speaking to TalkSport, the former England striker said: “He's been around Newcastle nearly three years now. He's got three years left on his contract, but he's probably thought to himself: ‘You know what? Newcastle - big club in Newcastle. Newcastle aren't a big club worldwide.’
“He's looking at them thinking: ‘I might want to go and win Ballons d'Or. I might want to win the Champions League. I don't just play in the Champions League, I want to win it. I want to win the Premier League. I'm not 21, I’m 25. Newcastle can't give me what I want.’”
Newcastle’s ambition questioned
Agbonlahor added that Newcastle’s transfer window has shown their limitations in terms of what they will be able to offer Isak in the immediate future.
“He's better than Newcastle,” he said. “He’s looked at the transfer window, only Elanga has been brought in. He knows the money he should be earning.
“You've got players that are a worse than him. He's a lot better than them, on bigger money. So he knows that he's worth £300,000 a week.”
With three years to run on his Newcastle contract, Isak faces a major battle to get the St James’ Park side to sell.
