Liverpool rocked by €500m update as deal agreed
Liverpool target Marc Bernal has reached a contract extension agreement with Barcelona, according to reports in Spain.
The 19-year-old’s current deal isn’t due to expire until 2029, but he has been locked in renewal talks for several weeks as the Blaugrana look to secure his long-term future amid growing transfer speculation.
Bernal was tentatively linked with an exit over the summer, while Spanish outlet Fichajes claim that Liverpool are among the clubs interested in signing him next year as they look to strengthen their midfield unit following strong rumours that Alexis Mac Allister may depart.
The Reds are also keeping close tabs on the likes of Lamine Camara, Alex Scott and Adam Wharton, although a move for Bernal is unlikely to be finalised as he is on the verge of officially signing a new contract at Camp Nou.
That is according to a report from Mundo Deportivo, who report that Barcelona have reached an agreement with Bernal over a new five-year deal, with the contract set to include a €500 million release clause.
The details of the deal have been finalised and it’s understood that an official announcement will follow shortly, potentially before the end of this week.
Bernal has made nine appearances across all competitions so far this season, but he has been demoted to the substitutes bench since the arrival of Rodri from Manchester City, with his compatriot immediately becoming a vital player under Hansi Flick.
Despite this, the Spain U21 international remains happy at Camp Nou and his new deal is set to be confirmed in the coming days.
Who will Liverpool sign?
With a move for Bernal now highly unlikely to be finalised, Liverpool will be forced to turn their attention to alternative midfield targets, with a move for the aforementioned Camara potentially on the cards.
The Senegal international was on the verge of joining Chelsea on Transfer Deadline Day, but AS Monaco blocked a sale and he was forced to remain with the Ligue 1 outfit until at least January.
It’s understood that Xabi Alonso’s side are still interested in signing Camara, however their top target is Scott, and this could allow Liverpool to swoop.
Reports indicate that Liverpool are now among the frontrunners to land Camara’s signature and they have been tipped to step up their pursuit of the Monaco midfielder next year, especially if Mac Allister is sold.
